Web Guard is a changin'.

On 23.Apr.1997, Shena Delian O'Brien and Danie Powers worked together to create Web Guard.

On Monday, 08.Nov.1999, Shena Delian O'Brien, the creator of Web Guard posted a message to the Web Guard mailing list (ONElist) indicating that Web Guard, after 2-1/2 years, would be going away.

(I have duplicated that message at the end of this page.)

Web Guard was the first "anti piracy" and "anti bandwidth theft" organization I joined on the web. I've joined many since, but it, and its founder, Shena, have always had a special place with me.

I stepped forward take over Web Guard. This includes the duties of ringmaster and re-hosting and updating the Web Guard site. Shena decided to accept my offer and entrust me with her creation.

(By the way, Shena will not be completely disappearing. She will remain principal moderator for the Web Guard Discussion List at ONElist.)

In the month since, she has patiently worked with me to help make these transitions happen.

The new URL for Web Guard is:

http://www.JamesSHuggins.com/h/wbg1/webguard.htm

You can also email me about Web Guard:

Shortly, Shena will be "taking down" the Web Guard site at Darklock (http://www.Darklock.com/webguard/) and putting a "referrer" page to the new site. Adding the "referrer" page will facilitate redirection for all the links across the net to the old site.

The new site is here now, at least in a brute force kind of way. I'll be tweaking and adjusting over the coming months.

The ONElist is still active and didn't change. If you were on it before you are on it now.

The webring is the same. If you were on it before you are on it now.

I have begun going through the webring checking it out, but my initial impression is that it is in good shape.

If you are in the queue and are wondering why you haven't made it to the webring, one of the reasons is this transition. My apologies for the long delay in that. If you have been in the queue for a while and still haven't moved, please write me and ask me about it.

If any of you have anything to request or to suggest, please do not hesitate to write me.

Thanks to everyone for their support during this transition.

And, a googolplex of thanks to Shena Delian O'Brien for her patience and help to me and for the time, effort and love she put into her creation: Web Guard. She is truly, the Mother of Web Guard.

I am looking forward to the day when we are so successful that we are no longer needed.

Subject: Attn: Web Guard Going Down

Greetings all,

I've been trying to figure out some alternatives but what it all comes down to is this: Web Guard will be going down. I'm going to try to find someone to take over the Webring but if I can't, it'll be destroyed in two weeks. If any one here wants to step in and take the ring over or knows someone who does, please speak up now.

The mailing list will stay up indefinitely or as long as people have an interest in it. However, the Web Guard website will be replaced with a 1 page set of links to alternatives and there will no longer be a link system available from there.

I want to thank all of our members who have helped to support the cause over these past two years. Thanks to everyone!

The extra text menu links (previously here) are being removed in the site redesign.
Browser and search engine improvements have eliminated the motivation/necessity for them.
