__________0. THOUGHTS

As most of you know, I've been moving the list "off" of Topica and "onto" my own system. Thanks for putting up with the test and transition emails.

I had moved first to use WorldCast (http://www.fairlogic.com/worldcast/index.shtml) from Fairlogic Systems. I'd identified some bugs with it, but thought it would work out.

It didn't.

In addition to all the other problems, it "mangled" the layout of my last issue. It was the proverbial straw.

I moved to the Gammadyne Mailer (http://gammadyne.com/mmail.htm). It is much more complex, and much more capable. For example, it lets me keep the information in an external Access database and it lets me program much of the interaction. It took about 6 hours of playing to get it like I want it, but it is SCREAMING.

If you'd like to help me test it, see Section 5 below.

In the last issue, Along with the "new" link to the "Windtalkers - The Story Behind the Movie" website I also provided an "old" link to "All You Should Know About Navajo Code Talkers". Unfortunately, this old link doesn't work any more. Thank you to everyone who wrote me to let me know. I've removed it from the Cherokee page on my website.

(The new link that works is http://www.click2flicks.com/wind_talkers/wind_talkers_ch1.htm)

I also wrote you that I had been able to contact Francis Gary Powers, Jr., son of Francis Gary Power, Sr., the U-2 pilot shot down over Russia and also the founder of the Cold War Museum (http://www.ColdWar.org). I'm in the process of adding some photos from his collection on my site. You can see the link to the first of those below.

__________1. QUOTATIONS

Brother, you say there is but one way to worship and serve the Great Spirit. If there is but one religion, why do you white people differ so much about it? Why not all agreed, as you can all read the Book?
          — Sogoyewapha, "Red Jacket", Senaca

Dream as if you'll live forever. Live as if you'll die today.
          — James Dean

everyone wants to be appreciated, so if you appreciate someone, don't keep it a secret.
          — Mary Kay Ash (1915 – 2001), founder, Mary Kay Cosmetics

Creativity is so delicate a flower that praise tends to make it bloom, while discouragement often nips it in the bud. Any of us will put out more and better ideas if our efforts are appreciated.
          — Alex F. Osborn. Advertising executive

__________2. EPHeMeRAe

every day interesting “stuff” crosses my desk. Some isn’t important enough to put on my site in any permanent way. But it is interesting enough to put there somehow, quickly, at least for a while.

These are ephemerae: collections of temporary, transitory tidbits.

Today's ephemerae include information about spy museums, flying and civil rights.

International Spy Museum:
There is a new museum in Washington, DC: the International Spy Museum. I haven't been, but based on their website, it is definitely "on the list".

The Right to Read:
This (extremely short) fictional story originally appeared in February, 1997. It describes the future, in 2096, when a combination of law and technology has combined to restrict our ability to read. For example, software monitors who and when each digital book is read. When written it was seen by many as hyperbole. Today, with congress having passed the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) and introducing additional laws to extend the length and scope of copyright controls, people are beginning to realize that the story is not as far fetched as they originally thought.

MSNBC (28.Aug.2002), "Destinations":
It seems that it is now possible to board an aircraft without identification, provided you are willing to undergo additional searches.

Techinformer (29.Aug.2002),
"Sept. 11 Shakes European Civil Liberties, Critics Say":
Apparently, European citizens are losing their civil liberties both more and faster than those of us in the US. And also, it appears that the European public hasn't awakened to the legal changes being pushed through the European Parliament.

__________3. NEW/CHANGED ON MY SITe

Gary Power's ejection Seat:
ejection seat from the 1960 Gary Powers U-2 incident. Wreckage is on display at the Central Armed Forces Museum in Moscow. On 1 May 1960, U-2 pilot Francis Gary Powers was shot down by the Soviets over Sverdlovsk. He was tried in August 1960, in a three-day open trial in Moscow and was sentenced to 10 years by the USSR Supreme Court's Military Cases Collegium. He spent 21 months in prison and was then exchanged in February 1962, for Soviet intelligence officer Rudolph Abel, who had been arrested in New York in 1957.

__________5. HOW YOU CAN HeLP Me

First, if you encounter something interesting . . . please forward it to me. I'd love to hear from you.

Second, if you know of anyone else who might appreciate receiving Snippets, forward a copy to them so that they can subscribe.

Third, and last, you can help me test the new system: send a subscribe message (see the bottom of this email) even though you are already susscribed. It isn't required, and you've got no obligation, but it would help to generate some test data. You should receive back an email that (a) acknowledges your request, (b) says you are already subscribed and (c) says you still are. If you test it and DON'T get that response, let me know. And, thanks in advance for the assistance.
