Because Webring Is Broken Webring

Welcome to James S. Huggins' Refrigerator Door

Welcome to my website.

This is a webring welcome page. I created this welcome page when I joined this webring to provide a special guide to my site for webring hoppers.

See the bottom of this page for an overview of how webring welcome pages work.

I hope that you enjoy your visit here. Feel free to sign my guestbook if you'd like to leave me a message or email me if you would prefer.

Comments for the
Because Webring Is Broken Webring

On "The Tuesday", 05.Sep.2000, Yahoo! "assimilated" Webring. On that day the Original WebRing died and the new Yahoo! WebRing was born.

In the weeks and months that followed, many of us worked to point out the many problems of the new approach, and to offer our suggested improvements. Much of this conversation was somewhat animated and the disagreements somewhat vocal.

This webring exists to protest the problems and to express our disagreements and disappointments.

This webring is not a Yahoo! WebRing. Rather, it is a webring hosted on an alternative service like RingSurf, Ringlink, Bravenet or others. (For more information on these alternative services, see my Wazillion Navbars Project.)

One of the many Yahoo! IDs I "own" is Because_Webring_Is_Broken. I adopted it in the month following "The Tuesday" (the integration of Yahoo! and Webring on 05.Sep.2000).

In one of the Yahoo! discussion clubs, WebringNews, we were examining all of the problems related to the integration. In a fit of frustration with newcomers who weren't reading all the prior posts about problems, I adopted this new ID. When it was suggested that we create a webring for it, I most willingly offered to "share" the name. And a webring was born.

This is also the very first Webring I ever joined that is not an Original WebRing system or Yahoo! WebRing system webring.  Rather, it is a RingSurf webring. Again the terminology changes.

After you check out these particular topics, you might like to explore the rest of my site (and get to know me better).  I recommend that you start with my "Home" Page. From there the "Front Door" will provide some highlights of the site, information on my navigation scheme and a bevy of graphics for the organizations I belong to and support. Then "Stuff About Me" will provide more info about me than you could possibly want. (I've included all these links in the link list below.)

From there, I'd suggest just exploring the various parts of the site as suits your interests.

Eliminate Pop-Up WindowsStop Pop-Up Windows, Ads & Cookies: I used to endorse and promote this tool: AdSubtract. Now, however, they have released AdSubtract Version 3.0 which actually removed features from the prior version. I cannot recommend this tool any more (unless you can get the prior version, AdSubtract Version 2.55). And I'm not the only one. See this page of reviews of AdSubtract Pro Version 3.0. When it worked before, it let you stop those annoying pop-up windows. It also blocked advertisements on the pages, blocked privacy invading cookies and speeded up page loads. All blocking was optional and you could make exceptions for individual sites. I received no money from this product; I endorsed it because it was just that good. Too bad they messed it up. ««»»

 Webring News and Announcements

WebRing.com Changes Big Time ---  It was October 2001 that WebRing.com came into existence following the end of Yahoo! Webring. Now, 5 years later, WebRing.com is changing again. Moving from primarily a free service to primarily a paid service, the system is undergoing massive change. Stay tuned.

Ringlink Activity  ---  While Ringlink has not released a new version since Version 3.2 on 21.Feb.2005, the system seems to be getting a lot of activity. Many people are discovering this great webring system and moving their webrings here. If you don't know about Ringlink, definitely check out this great webring system. I personally recommend it.

WoW  ---  The World of Webrings features the World of Webrings discussion list. It offers a forum for both webring owners (ringmasters) and webring members to discuss the latest hot topics about all webrings, including WebRing.com, Ringlink , Alt-Webring, RingSurf, Bravenet and others. If you belong to any webring in any webring service, you should join this list.

RingSurf Passes 3 Year Anniversary  ---  It was 3 years ago, on 16.Aug.2003 when the WoW list list noted that RingSurf's domain name registration had changed. Then the new owner came forward. A RingSurf Feature List was developed and debated. Then, on Thanksgiving day, 27.Nov.2003 the new owner posted on the WoW list that the new RingSurf is up! If you haven't checked it out lately, see what has happened in the last three years.

James S. Huggins is interviewed and quoted in a new Salon.com article entitled: The Strange Saga of Yahoo and Webring (05.Dec.2001)

Article About Webrings  ---  Check out this excellent Salon.com article about the history of Yahoo! and WebRing.com: The Strange Saga of Yahoo and Webring . For some, it will bring back memories. For others, it will explain the history. Now, I wonder if they will update it to talk about the latest WebRing.com changes.
