Forums and email Lists

This section of my website holds my reference information about the old Yahoo! WebRing system. The Yahoo! WebRing system no longer exists. On 12.Oct.2001, Yahoo! announced that it was leaving the webring business. The Yahoo! WebRing system was "spun off" and new operates as the WebRing.com system. See my section on the WebRing.com system for the latest information.

This page provides describes and links to the various forums and email lists for the Yahoo! WebRing system and also for the other webring systems.

This article is part of the Wazillion Navbars Project: a project to explore and write about the Yahoo! WebRing system. For a list of these articles click here or see the section menu at the bottom of this page.

Note that the Yahoo! WebRing system no longer exists. It has been spun off to the independent WebRing.com system. The Wazillion Navbars Project has been closed. These pages are thus, no longer accurate and do not apply to the new WebRing.com system. Instead, these pages are being maintained for a "historical record".

For current information on the WebRing.com system, see my webring subsection about the WebRing.com system.

What are forums and email lists?

. This is the WebRing.com system logo as of Oct.2006. This logo is shown ONLY to illustrate the logo for purposes of this article. The appearance of this logo in this article does not imply any endorsement or affiliation of any kind between this site or the author and the WebRing.com system.
.
This is the new logo for the WebRing.com system, implemented in their changes of Oct.2006. It distinguishes this webring system from the other systems like Ringlink, RingSurf and Bravenet. See also my articles: WebRing.com Logos and Is Webring a Trademark?

When Yahoo! began the process of assimilating the Original WebRing system, the information traveled like lightening across the net through the various forums and email lists that exist to discuss webrings.

Some of these lists continue even to this day, after Yahoo! has spun off the Yahoo! WebRing system to create the WebRing.com system.

This page presents a sampling of the most active and most important of these forums and lists.

If you are a ringmaster, or if you are considering becoming a ringmaster, or if you are a member of a wazillion webrings, you should investigate these forums and email lists.

If you would like to suggest another forum or list, please email me.

Current Forums and email Lists

World of Webrings ListWorld of Webrings List: This email discussion list is not targeted to any particular webring system. Instead it supports discussion of all of them, including the former Yahoo! WebRing and its successor the WebRing.com system, Ringlink (the "open source" self-hosted webring system), RingSurf (which has had explosive growth immediately after the Yahoo! WebRing merger), Bravenet, and any others that spring up. I strongly encourage all ringmasters to join this list. You join on the web.

Ringlink ListRinglink List: An email list for Ringlink. Specifically supports the Ringlink system. If you host a Ringlink system, you should definitely be on this list.

Web Page and HTML Help for Webring UsersWeb Page and HTML Help for Webring Users: Because the Member Resources & Technical Support forum (see below) cannot answer questions related to web pages and HTML. For example, if you cannot add the code to your page or if adding the code causes your page to do weird things, Andrea's forum can't help. This forum exists for that purpose. This forum is related to the Web Page and HTML Help for Webring Users webring. I own this webring and this forum.

Member Resources & Technical SupportWebring (WebRing.com): A successor to the Official Webring Help Club (now inactive and deleted, see below), this WebRing.com hosted Forum is also administered by Andrea. (Andrea has been a system volunteer perhaps longer than any other person. She gives many hours in the support of the system through things like this forum.) It is an open discussion forum to discuss WebRing.com features, wishes, thoughts and the like. However, users are discouraged from posting any problems or questions that require answers. Andrea prefers that such questions be directed to the Member Resources and Technical Support forum (see below) which she also administers. (NB: Questions directed to the Member Resources and Technical Support webring can only be answered by Andrea.)

Member Resources & Technical SupportWebring Managers (WebRing.com): A successor to the Official Webring Help Club (now inactive and deleted, see below), this WebRing.com hosted Forum is associated with the Webring Managers webring owned by Andrea. It is a place for managers of WebRing.com system webrings to discuss ideas, ethics, tactics, etc. This forum does not permit any discussion of any other type of webring and is closely moderated. Users are prohibited from posting any problems or questions that require answers. Andrea prefers that such questions be directed to the Member Resources and Technical Support forum (see below) which she also administers. (NB: Questions directed to the Member Resources and Technical Support webring can only be answered by Andrea.)

Member Resources & Technical SupportMember Resources & Technical Support: A successor to the Official Webring Help Club (now inactive and deleted, see below), this WebRing.com hosted Forum is also administered by Andrea (i.e.,  Andreasrings). It focuses exclusively on issues with the WebRing.com system. Commentary and discussion is not permitted. The forum exists to posts issues and questions and to await responses by Andrea. Responses and help from others is also not permitted. Andreas has contact into the WebRing.com system organization and can help to intervene to fix a problem. (The other related forums, called "Webring" and "Webring Managers" allow commentary but discourage or prohibit questions requiring answers.)

Inactive or Deleted Forums and email Lists

Webring News UncensoredWebring News Uncensored (inactive and possibly deleted): A Yahoo! Club dedicated to Yahoo! WebRing. Founded after aggressive moderation of the club called Webring News caused many deleted posts and banned Yahoo! IDs. Yahoo! WebRing claimed to not monitor this club. And even semi-official answers were not posted. However, the club consolidated information from other sources, including the other Webring News. Now mostly inactive, the club still serves as a repository for some of the history of the Yahoo! WebRing system.

Webring News (inactive and deleted)Webring News (inactive and deleted): This was another Yahoo! Club dedicated to Yahoo! WebRing. However, it was closed by the moderator/owner and all club message history was purged. It is, in my opinion, very unfortunate. This club had existed for more than a year and was once the closest thing there was to an official information conduit. Not official, but close. The Club Moderator, Bob Marion (who I nicknamed "The Bob") has old contacts into the StarSeed organization and hence into Yahoo! WebRing. The postings were a bit too moderated for my personal taste. I had many postings deleted (some now echoed at Webring News Uncensored) and at least one Yahoo! ID banned. Still, this club had accumulated much of the history of the Yahoo! transformation of the Original WebRing. It had also accumulated much of the history of the communal response to that transformation. Perhaps that is why it was deleted and purged. Let's just say I'm not expecting a Christmas card from Yahoo! this year.

Surviving Y WROfficial Webring Help (inactive and deleted): Founded by Andreasrings, this club is the successor to a prior club: Surviving Y WR. It focuses exclusively on problems with the WebRing.com system. Commentary and discussion is not permitted. The forum exists to posts issues and questions and to await responses by Andreasrings. Responses and help from others is also not permitted. Andreasrings has contact into the WebRing.com system organization and can help to intervene to fix a problem. This club has been replaced with the Member Resources and Technical Support Forum.

Surviving Y WRSurviving Y WR (inactive and deleted): Founded by Andreasrings, this club focused exclusively on problems with Yahoo! WebRing. After Yahoo! spun off the system creating the WebRing.com system, this club became an open forum for commentary about the WebRing.com system. It's "official" status was replaced by a new club: Official Webring Help.

The RingMasters Mailing ListThe RingMasters Mailing List (inactive and possibly deleted): Formerly an "official" ringmasters discussion list affiliated with the Original WebRing. Possibly "gone". Certainly the least active of the "major" forums. To subscribe, send email and type "subscribe ringmasters-l Youremail" in the message body.

Y Webring News Club 'Opinions'Y Webring News Club 'Opinions' (inactive and possibly deleted): Together with the parallel club 'Problems' this club received significant membership postings. It was not, at last check, inactive, per se, but its message volume is very low.

Y Webring News Club 'Problems'Y Webring News Club 'Problems' (inactive and possibly deleted): Together with the parallel club 'Opinions' this club received significant membership postings.  It was not, at last check, inactive, per se, but its message volume is very low.

RinglinksRinglinks Club: A Yahoo! Club for Ringlink. Very little activity because most Ringlink discussion occurs on the Rinlink Mailing List (see above). However, it helps Yahoo! Clubbers to find Ringlink.

RingSurf (Club)RingSurf (Club): One of the many clubs created as a result of the Yahoo! WebRing Assimilation, this one was dedicated to RingSurf. In the early days it served as a forum between the dissatisfied Yahoo! WebRing community and the RingSurf development community, helping to explore new ideas and features. Today it is mostly inactive.

RingSurf ClubRingSurf Club: A second club for RingSurf, this one was started by someone who was upset over one email on the first RingSurf club. Today it is mostly inactive.

Other Forums and email Lists

WebringCommunityNewsClubWebringCommunityNewsClub: One of the many clubs created as a result of the Yahoo! WebRing Assimilation. It is now a small club with occasional postings.

The Dark Lord YWebring's ClubThe Dark Lord YWebring's Club: One of the many clubs created as a result of the Yahoo! WebRing Assimilation, this one has a "dark" color. Never as active as some of the others, it did have some creative postings.

RingSurf Takes Over YWebringRingSurf Takes Over YWebring: Another of the many clubs created as a result of the Yahoo! WebRing Assimilation, this one never developed a large membership base. But it is an example of the "emotion" behind many of these clubs.

yborgGROUPSyborgGROUPS: This protest club only garnered a couple members and a couple posts. But I like the name and graphic.

The Official Pissed Off With Yahoo! Club (oohaY seitiCeoG System Status)The Official Pissed Off With Yahoo! Club (oohaY seitiCeoG System Status): This protest club only garnered a couple members and a couple posts. It was quiet for months. But it still exists and sometimes gets another post or two.

 Webring News and Announcements

WebRing.com Changes Big Time ---  It was October 2001 that WebRing.com came into existence following the end of Yahoo! Webring. Now, 5 years later, WebRing.com is changing again. Moving from primarily a free service to primarily a paid service, the system is undergoing massive change. Stay tuned.

Ringlink Activity  ---  While Ringlink has not released a new version since Version 3.2 on 21.Feb.2005, the system seems to be getting a lot of activity. Many people are discovering this great webring system and moving their webrings here. If you don't know about Ringlink, definitely check out this great webring system. I personally recommend it.

WoW  ---  The World of Webrings features the World of Webrings discussion list. It offers a forum for both webring owners (ringmasters) and webring members to discuss the latest hot topics about all webrings, including WebRing.com, Ringlink , Alt-Webring, RingSurf, Bravenet and others. If you belong to any webring in any webring service, you should join this list.

RingSurf Passes 3 Year Anniversary  ---  It was 3 years ago, on 16.Aug.2003 when the WoW list list noted that RingSurf's domain name registration had changed. Then the new owner came forward. A RingSurf Feature List was developed and debated. Then, on Thanksgiving day, 27.Nov.2003 the new owner posted on the WoW list that the new RingSurf is up! If you haven't checked it out lately, see what has happened in the last three years.

James S. Huggins is interviewed and quoted in a new Salon.com article entitled: The Strange Saga of Yahoo and Webring (05.Dec.2001)

Article About Webrings  ---  Check out this excellent Salon.com article about the history of Yahoo! and WebRing.com: The Strange Saga of Yahoo and Webring . For some, it will bring back memories. For others, it will explain the history. Now, I wonder if they will update it to talk about the latest WebRing.com changes.

Webring Sections and Subsections

The Webring Section is a large section of my website. I have divided it into four major "subsections".

  • General Information
  • The WebRing.com System
  • Webrings I Own and Belong To
  • The Wazillion Navbars Project

each "subsection" has it's own special "logo".

As you travel in the various subsections you will find, near the bottom of each page, links to pages within that subsection and also links to the other subsections. To go to any subsection, just click on the "logo" or on the text link for that subsection.

Webrings: General Information

This subsection includes general information about webrings. Webrings can be hosted by a variety of different services. This section deals with the overall concepts and issues, not with any one particular "brand" of webring.

It includes my Webring FAQ, links to articles about webrings, and general help information. Click here or on the graphic.

The WebRing.com System

This subsection includes specific information about the WebRing.com system.

While not the only webring system on the net, it is the best known and the most used. I own many webrings in this system and belong to many webrings in this system. (I also own and belong to many webrings in other systems as well.) Click here or on the graphic.

Webrings I Own and Belong To

This subsection shows all the webrings I own and links to all the webrings to which I belong. This includes webrings in Ringlink, RingSurf, Bravenet and the WebRing.com system as well.

If you are looking to join one of my webrings, this is a good place to start. If you wonder about the webrings I belong to, this is the place to go. Click here or on the graphic.

The extra text menu links (previously here) are being removed in the site redesign.
Browser and search engine improvements have eliminated the motivation/necessity for them.
