When the Road Turns
Inspirational Stories About People with MS

A Book by Margot Russell

I met Margot Russell when she wrote me. She said "I've been perusing your site for years--since my own MS diagnosis. It's a great site!"

Now that is one way to get my attention!

She also noticed that I did not have her book listed. I wanted to correct that.

This book, a collection of essays edited by Margot Russell, a former television producer and broadcaster who has the disease, approaches the task by focusing on 17 patients who, without self-pity, describe their passages from diagnosis to acceptance. In doing so, they air their concerns, frustrations, anger and, ultimately, acceptance. Perhaps, Ms. Russell suggests, people are most defined by moments of adversity. She writes:

"Many people have come to see disease as a gift in their lives. Often, they learn that they are more than their disease, and once freed by that certainty they go on to live the rest of the story."

For example, Dave Perez, a divorced father who single-handedly cares for his three children, describes how he overcame his sense of despair as a victim of MS by focusing on living for his kids. Inbal Tsur, an Israeli artist, writes about how she has learned to manipulate a paintbrush with her mouth after losing the use of her arms. Others include renowned oceanographer Richard Radtke, who becomes the first disabled man to reach the South Pole; a pilot who battles the FAA to keep her pilot’s license; and a woman who is now enjoying life as a mother to a new baby despite doctors’ advice not to further risk her health by becoming pregnant.

Margot Russell has worked as a news broadcaster, a reporter and a television producer, and was diagnosed with MS in 1998. She is an inspirational speaker and Executive Director of the Sea of Dreams Foundation, which creates programs to better the lives of the disabled. She is also a reporter and a staff writer for a magazine.
