Cherokee

You would be hard pressed to tell by looking at me, but I am Cherokee.

I am registered as a member of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma.

When I tell people I am Cherokee, the most common question they immediately ask is "How much?".

To me, asking how much Cherokee I am, is like me asking one of my colleagues how much American they are. Yes, part of Cherokee is a blood line. Yes, the American Federal Government tracks blood percentages for purposes of federal aid programs.

But a part of Cherokee, like any part of Native American, is a question of citizenship. And I am a citizen.

And a part of Cherokee, like any part of Native American, is a part of culture and understanding. As I work to explore my culture and to increase my understanding, I offer this page with some of what I have found.

Cherokee Language:  A brief look at some of the Cherokee Language.

Canadian AboriginalCanadian Aboriginal: Advertising itself as "your source for Canadian Aboriginal News & Information".

Cherokee/English DictionaryCherokee/English Dictionary: Provides interactive lookup of individual words in English, giving the Cherokee word.

El Dorado Ignores Genocide of Nativesel Dorado Ignores Genocide of Natives: An extremely critical view of the Spielberg movie and it's depiction of indigenous peoples.

International Leonard Peltier Defense CommitteeInternational Leonard Peltier Defense Committee: Leonard Peltier has been behind bars for 24 years for a crime the government now admits it could not convict him of. His case has drawn the attention of international human rights organizations and citizens, including Amnesty International, The European Parliament, Mother Teresa, Ramsey Clark (former Attorney General), and many, many others. Please at least visit and check it out for yourself.

Northern Community CookbookNorthern Community Cookbook: Not exclusively Native American, featured on the site of the Northern News Service, for Canada's Arctic Northwest Territories and Nunavut, and featuring recipes of the Inuit.

Powhatan Renape NationPowhatan Renape Nation: An American Indian Nation located at the Rankokus Indian Reservation in Westampton Township, Burlington County, New Jersey.

Pocahontas MythPocahontas Myth: Powhatan Renape Nation statement on the Pocahontas myth and on the Disney portrayal in the movie. "It is unfortunate that this sad story, which euro-Americans should find embarrassing, Disney makes entertainment and perpetuates a dishonest and self-serving myth at the expense of the Powhatan Nation." (Chief Roy Crazy Horse)

Peace PartyPeace Party: A Multicultural comic book featuring Native Americans.

Pocahontas II: Flawed AgainPocahontas II: Flawed Again: A review of the direct-to-video movie by Disney..

Windtalkers - The Story Behind the MovieWindtalkers - The Story Behind the Movie: This movie was a severe disappointment. It virtually ignored the code talkers and used them as a pretext for a film. This site, apparently owned by the Navajo Code Talkers Association provides credible information.

The extra text menu links (previously here) are being removed in the site redesign.
