Joining Using Email

Joining using email is very easy.

But because some people think that you must "register" with Topica to subscribe to Topica hosted newsletters and email lists, I have included this page to give more specific instructions, and to explain that it is not necessary to register with Topica.

General Instructions

If you are familiar with the Topica mailing list process, these instructions are probably redundant. If you are new to the process, they will guide you and also explain how to not register.

Joining this email list is a two part process:

1. Giving me your email address, and
2. Confirming the subscription.

The two part process is called "double opt-in". The "best" mailing lists use it to ensure that other people don't subscribe you without your permission.

The Email Address

To give me your email address, just send a blank email to:

Excelis-Grads-Subscribe@Topica.com

The email address that is your "from" address will be the email address used to subscribe you.

Confirming the Subscription

After sending in your email address, you will receive a confirmation email. You must click the link in this email to confirm your subscription. This is called double-opt-in. It stops people from subscribing you without your permission.

When you click the link, your browser will open a window with the Topica website. That window will say:

Thanks. Please register to continue.

And, right below that it will say:

Thanks! You have been added to Excelis Grads. Please continue with registration.

Note that you do not need to register. Simply close that window.

At the point that the window pops up, you have successfully confirmed your subscription; you do not need to fill out the form asking you for your personal information.

Once you have confirmed your subscription, you are done. At that point, you are completely subscribed.

Children's Online Privacy Protection Act Information Practices

COPPA (the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act) requires that websites post "prominent links" to a notice of how they collect, use, and/or disclose "personal information" from children.

In order to subscribe to any of my ezines and mailing lists (e.g.,  Snippets) you must give me your email address (duh!). COPPA considers this "personal information". So, I am posting this notice on this page to comply with that law.

Rather than attempt to obtain parental permission and maintain the wazillions of records required by COPPA, I just don't collect personal data from anyone under 13. If I somehow discover that someone under 13 has subscribed, I unsubscribe that person.
